Exciting School of Education International Experience
The School of Education offering an exciting chance for you to visit Santiago, Chile next May for the 14 day
experience of a lifetime. Not only will you get to practice your Spanish but you will have the chance to experience
all of the excitement of one of the world’s largest cities. You will be hosted by Finis Terra University.
Finis Terra is a large private university situated in one of the loveliest parts of Santiago close to shopping, restaurants,
museums and salsa dance clubs. You will be hosted by families who have been carefully screened by
the university. These families have hosted numerous student groups over the years from many countries.
The families speak English but will delight in helping you to practice your Spanish. The trip includes activities
on the university campus including shared classes with the Finis Terra education majors. There will be
lots of sightseeing and chances to go to the Andes Mountains and to the coastal cities of Valparaiso and Vina
Del Mar. USC Upstate offers several different scholarships to help with your expenses. You may also use
your student loans even if you have exhausted your funds for the spring semester. Because this is a university
sponsored trip during Maymester, additional loans are easily arranged. Some class credit is available on an
individual basis. This trip is open to all School of Education majors and to the USC Upstate campus. The
cost, including airfare, lodging, food, tours, and entrance tickets to sights, is included in the price which will be
around $3850. Talk to your classmates and treat yourselves to an unforgettable experience abroad. Dr. Kela Goodman
will be hosting this trip. For further information, please contact Dr. Goodman, Dr. Hooks, Dr. Reed, Dr. Leitner
(Sumter) or Dr. Faulkner (Greenville). There will be an informational meeting in November.
Program Cost: $ 3,850 (includes airfare, lodging and some meals) * Deposit of $100 is due Feb 1st , 2013

NEW COURSES
A unique course: “What is inclusion?”
Standing in line at the grocery, you’re likely to encounter conversations
with other shoppers. If you’re a special educator,
these conversations can become interesting. Typically, once
others discover your field, they have a story to tell, questions
to ask, or a family member to diagnose. No matter their certification,
special educators are assumed to have knowledge
that spans the entire spectrum of disabilities and services.
In answer to this required understanding and to best prepare
our undergraduates for future contributions to the field of
special education, students seeking certification in learning
disabilities are taking a unique course this fall. SELD 411 is
a practicum course that combines field trips, presentations,
and current literature in the field to answer the question,
“What is inclusion?”
Thus far, students have visited McCarthy Tezler in Spartanburg
District 7, the Center for Developmental Services in
downtown Greenville, the Meyer Center, and Spartanburg
District 6’s Child Development Center. At each site, students
explore how the program meets the essentials components of
inclusive services as outlined below:

Inclusion foundations
Inclusive services models
Collaborative teaming/planning
Collaborative skills
Access to the general education curriculum: universal design
for learning
Access to the general education curriculum: differentiated
instruction
Learning strategies, classroom organization and behavior
management, and scientifically based reading instruction
Family involvement
Student self‐determination and collaboration
Future site visits will include the Washington Center, Dorman
High School’s 9th grade campus, and Super Duper (a
publisher of educational materials). These visits have proved
to be both motivational and inspirational for students thus
far. Jill St. John, a student in the LD program on the Greenville
campus, says, “I love going to all the different places. I
am continually caught up in the atmosphere of love and care
for the student. Each visit renews and solidifies my desire to
work with children who have disabilities.”

*Clinical Students, please make sure that you are in contact with your host
teacher and follow the schedule that you have set with that teacher. In other
words, be there when you say you are going to be in the classroom and at the
time that you set up with the host. Every day that you are in the school
building is like an interview. Display good manners, model professional and
responsible behavior, and be a good communicator. Communication is an

Educating All
Children (TEACh)
What is TEACh? Any USC Upstate SoE student is welcome to come
be a part of TEACh (Teachers Educating All Children) student organization.
There is no cost to join! The TEACh organization aims to help
students get out in the classroom now, gain valuable experience and
knowledge for the future, and network with people who can help them
when they begin their careers in education. TEACh meets three times
each semester to learn and discuss relevant topics in education, hear
and engage with experienced guest speakers, and plan service activities
for schools and classes in our community. In addition to attending the
whole‐group meetings, TEACh members participate in at least 5 hours
of service in any area of education throughout the school year. Many
TEACh members assist in area schools and with TEACh‐sponsored
events such as the USC Upstate Scholastic Book Fair, Canned Food
Drive, and Praxis I review sessions.
