Catriona Doherty
has a secret dream of
being famous (shh,
don’t tell anyone!)
so this week she
took a step in the
right direction and
signed up to be a film
extra (page 17). She also
learned some nifty self-defence moves
(page 24) before enjoying a night out
at Hemingway’s (page 20).
This week Megan has
been stuffing her face
with some yummy
new additions to
the menu at Stills
on Yas Island
(page 20). She
also caught up
with the organisers
of the Shababna wa
Shebna summer camp (page 7). Then
she set about gathering all the news
that’s new and approved for your
reading pleasure (page 7).
The little things in life
This week we’d like to dedicate this
column to all readers who could use a little
stress management.
With temperatures rising in the capital,
tempers can easily sizzle out of control.
We’re all busy running around trying to
get a million things done in each 24-hour
period. But let’s try and take a moment and
ask ourselves whether we really need to
sweat the small stuff.
We’re just as guilty as the next person of
getting wrapped up in our own problems,
but we’ve found a little reality check helps
every now again.
For example, I’ve been moaning (a lot)
this week about an injured shoulder and
how it stops me from doing circuits in the
gym. I’ve impinged a tendon – big deal. In
a few weeks, after a bit of physio I’ll be ok,
unlike a friend of mine who has just lost his
chance to play for a professional baseball
team after tearing his shoulder muscle.
Your job is awful? You’re surrounded by
imbeciles, not paid enough and your boss is
crazy? Think about all the people without
work or working for minimum wage, suffering
the effects of a double-dip recession.
My point is, let’s just take a look around
us before we overreact to a problem and
start getting upset. There really are bigger
things to worry about.
So this week, when a delivery guy arrives
a little late with your take out; the petrol
pump attendant takes a little longer than
normal to come and serve you or the
waitress makes a mistake with your order,
take a moment and ask yourself: is this
really a big deal?
And breathe …

This week Sawaiba
was in the mood for
giggles when she
sat down with the
hilarious Stephen
Frost to chat
about his upcoming
performance in the
improvisation show Whose
Line Is It Anyway? (page 8). After that,
she got her fill of the cinema when she
checked out some of this week’s silver
screen offerings, read her verdict on
whether they’re a hit or miss (page
22). Finally, she chatted with Vicki
Wong to find out just how much she
loves the Capital (page 28).

Strike a pose
Fancy strutting your stuff on the catwalk? Do you have a face for film or
dream of seeing your name in lights? We’ve been scouting around the
capital to bring you this guide to being seen and heard
Looking good
Georgia Willis, manager of HME Models gives
us the lowdown on modelling in Abu Dhabi.
Do your models have to be a certain weight
or height?
No, every brand has a different personality
and therefore requires different types
of brand ambassadors. This includes a
variety of ages, nationalities, looks and
sizes. We don’t discriminate on these
variables, we simply categorise people, so
that a brand and our models are always
perfectly matched.
We are always on the lookout for new
models including children, babies and teens,
as well as young and mature adults.
How can people in Abu Dhabi get involved
with modelling?
Firstly register online through our website
www.hmemodels.com and upload your
photo. Once our scouting crew receives the
registration form and images, the expert
team researches each submission for
potential models.
Then potential models are invited in for a
meeting to have professional photos taken
and a quick interview to see where in the
industry they are most suited.
We also deal with a number of
promotional experts and hostesses
for meet and greet events, as well as
entertainers including dancers, actors, firebreathers
and stilt-walkers, not forgetting
of course production people such as
photographers, stylists, location experts,
videographers and choreographers.
Are there a lot of modelling
opportunities in Abu Dhabi?
We always have something fun and exciting
going on. Often we need hostesses for big
events, models for a photo shoot or catwalk
show and promoters for product launches.
So there really are a lot of opportunities for
all different kinds of people in Abu Dhabi
and we have some exciting events coming
up next season.
What type of photos should people submit
to register?
The majority of images that we receive
aren’t taken by professional photographers.
Our team is very skilled at scouting
successful models. If we see potential in
amateur photos we will recommend that
the model has their professional portfolio
made by our photographers or on special
occasions we do sometimes organise this.
We need to see a person’s natural beauty so
it’s best to email good quality photos, don’t
wear too much make-up and choose simple
fitted clothing such as skinny jeans and a
T-shirt.
Extra! Extra!
George Saad a freelance filmmaker
with Creative Lab, has the
following advice for
aspiring actors; “Being a
film extra is a great way
to get into the industry
and to make contacts.
Creative Lab make a lot
of short films and are
always looking for extras.
Start off small and work
your way up. I’ve heard
many success stories of
people who started off as
an extra and then pursued
a career in acting or media.”
Creative Lab recently shot
a film in Ras Al Khaimah
that required 30 extras on
set. “Sometimes we require
one extra for a film and
sometimes we need 20, it
depends on the film. An extra
could be doing anything in
a scene, such as sitting on
a bus or walking around a
supermarket. A wide variety of
people are needed and no prior
acting experience is required,”
George said.
To get involved register online
at: twofour54.com/creativelab
Practice, practice, practice…
What better way to hone your acting skills
than to practice?
We’re lucky to have New York Film
Academy (NYFA) based here in the capital.
NYFA Managing Director Imad DeirAtany
says, “Our students always need extras. We
require actors of all ages, male and female,
of different nationalities. You don’t need to
have a lot of acting experience.”
To take part, e-mail a photo and a short
brief about yourself to: abudhabi@nyfa.edu
NYFA students often use Facebook to
find actors, log on to: www.facebook.com/
groups/287504964815/ or www.facebook.

Catriona Doherty
Ambitious parent Farah
Al Alami, tells us
why she wants her
22-month-old son
Rakan Ala’ Hamam
to be a model.
Has your child
modelled in the past?
No not yet, I’ve been unable to find
opportunities here in the UAE. Last
year a kid’s clothing franchise ran a
Cute Baby competition on Facebook.
Out of 300 entries my son was one of
20 winners.
Why did you decide to involve your
child with modelling?
I’m a marketing and communications
manager for a healthcare organisation
and I invite toddlers to model in the
healthcare advertisements. I am always
thrilled by the look of excitement on the
toddler’s faces and wonder about the
effects of this on character building.
I am keen for my son to have this
experience at a young age to build his
confidence, give him the opportunity to
socialise and explore the world around
him more.
My husband and I agreed to expose
our son to a range of activities such as
swimming, playing music or anything
that allows him to find his hidden
talents and help him to make better
decisions in the future.
Do you think your child has what it
takes to be a model?
Every mother believes that her
child is the cutest but it would
be nice to hear feedback from a
professional, experienced person
in the field of modelling. It would
definitely put a smile on my face.
All children are beautiful, yet my
son is definitely a cute, beautiful
child with his big, dark eyes and
long eyelashes. My son has the
real Arabic charm, may Allah
bless him!
He is also funny, sociable and
has charisma that attracts people
to him wherever we go. Should
my son get a chance to model, it
would definitely be an exciting
experience for him and for his
parents, especially because it’s
a rare opportunity in our region.
It would be a great part of his
learning process.

Sydney, Australia with her husband and is currently working
as a make-up artist for MAC cosmetics. We asked Vicki what
five things she likes best about Abu Dhabi.
The location
Abu Dhabi is located in the middle of the world. We can travel
to other Middle Eastern countries or Europe within a few hours.
I’ve already travelled to Africa and I am planning another trip to
Scandinavia very soon.
Family place
Abu Dhabi is a really family-oriented place. There are loads
of family activities here. Every shopping mall has a dedicated
children’s playing area. People are very friendly towards
families with small children too, which I just love!
Culturally rich
Abu Dhabi is much more mature and arty than Dubai. I love
the Cultural Foundation and Heritage Village. These are good
places to visit for Islamic art, theatre, poetry performances, etc.
With Saadiyat Island and its path of development, I am sure it
will become a stunner!
Laidback lifestyle
When I told my parents about my plan to move to the UAE,
the images that appeared in their heads included: skyscrapers,
tourists and shopping malls everywhere! In fact, Abu Dhabi
not only offers luxury hotels and restaurants, it has the seaside
promenade along the Corniche – which is a great place for sun
bathing! I couldn’t forget BBQs in the parks either, which are
perfect for the weekend.
Safety
I feel quite safe here in the capital. There is a relatively low
crime rate and my husband once dropped his wallet in the car
park and someone found it and give it back to him! That only
happens in Abu Dhabi!

A hair-raising experience
Abu Dhabi Week enjoyed an interactive
science lesson at the Sony Science Show.
We felt a jolt of static electricity pass
through our body, laughed as our friend’s
hair stood on end, balanced huge balloons
in the air and watched spinning balls of
smoke fly over our head.
A number of Science Shows took
place at the Abu Dhabi Theatre this
week. Sony hosted these fun, interactive
demonstrations as part of their global
community initiative designed to spark
children’s interest in science.
Japanese entertainer Sochri Nishimura
taught visitors about electricity,
aerodynamics, gravity, air pressure and
electromagnetism in a fun, engaging way.
Sochri used everyday materials such as
balloons, paper, plastic, cardboard, candles
and string, and encouraged the kids to
replicate the experiments at home.

Email editor@abudhabiweek.ae
A number of local school children
attended the show including Hind
Almazroui from Al Rabeeh School.
“I really liked the big balloons and all
of the different experiments. It was so
much fun trying to jump up and catch the
balloons,” said Hind.
Hind’s teacher Tric Collier said “Al
Rabeeh School came to the show last year
too and the children absolutely loved it. It’s
very well run, entertaining and informative.
It brings the world of science to kids with an
exciting dynamic.”

Time to smarten up
Abu Dhabi Week gets hold of two of the latest must-have smartphones to hit the market
25
Samsung Galaxy Note
If you’re a fan of the excellent Samsung
Galaxy SII (and we certainly are) then
you’re going to love the new Galaxy Note.
First things first, let’s look at that screen.
The 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED display
isn’t just big, it’s massive. The 1280 x 800
pixels you once could only get with a fullsize
laptop can now slide comfortably into
your front pocket.
In true PDA style, Samsung has
also reintroduced the
stylus, or as they
call it – the S Pen.
To be completely
honest, we didn’t
really get along with it
but the S Pen does provide
some neat tricks. The little
button on the side of the stylus
serves as a useful shortcut option,
while double-tapping the screen
with the S Pen brings up the
Quick Memo app for nifty
note taking, where you can
draw, hand write notes
and annotate websites.
Another plus
is the battery life – it’s phenomenal.
Considering the size of that screen and
the ultra-fast CPU, you’d expect battery
Top three free Android apps…
Instagram
If, like us, you love
snapping away on
your mobile and
sharing your pics
with friends then
Instagram is perfect for
you. This social-photo app lets you spice
up your shots with a selection of great
effects and filters and quickly share them
on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. Over 30
million users can’t be wrong!
JuiceDefender
As smartphones
get more and more
powerful, one of the
main problems we
encounter is shortened
battery life. This is where
JuiceDefender comes in. This power
life to suffer but our test model easily
lasted a full day on a single charge even
after some serious web browsing and a
prolonged YouTube session.
Is there anything we didn’t like? Well,
once again we come back to the size. It
wasn’t a problem for us but for some it
might be a little tricky to use one-handed
and it is a pretty snug fit in all but the
baggiest of pockets. Also, even we have
to admit that it did feel a little strange
holding such a large device up to
our ear when making a call –
although the call quality
was excellent and
the loudspeaker
unbelievably,
well, loud.
Pros: That amazing screen! Combines
the best elements of a smartphone
and a tablet…
Cons: … as long as the dimensions
don’t put you off.
We say: If you like your phones
supersized they don’t come much
bigger and better than this!
management app is packed with smart
functions that automatically manage the
most battery draining features of your
phone, like 3G/4G connectivity and WiFi.
It really does work – try it for yourself
and see.
Evernote
In a nutshell, Evernote basically helps
you stay organised, save your ideas and
improve productivity.
How does it work?
It lets you take
notes, capture
photos, create to-do
lists, record voice
reminders and makes
these notes completely searchable,
whether you are at home, at work, or
on the go. We don’t know how we ever
managed without it!
BlackBerry Bold 9900
When BlackBerry offered us a chance to
review the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 it
couldn’t have come at a better time; our
BlackBerry Torch had given up the ghost
just days before.
We're used to the heavier Torch, so the
first thing we loved about the Bold was
its size. At just 10.5mm and 130g, it's the
thinnest and lightest BlackBerry yet – and
not so far from the Samsung
Galaxy SII which, at 8.5mm,
is the thinnest Smartphone
we’ve seen.
We never quite
converted from our old
Curve to the new Torch;
and the Bold was like
being reunited with an
old friend, but with
some swishy extras.
We love, love, love
the touchscreen
on the Bold.
The term
user-friendly is
somewhat
overused
but in this case we’d
have to utter it, the Bold is just so easy
to handle. And although the screen is a lot
Top three free BlackBerry apps…
WhatsApp Messenger
One of our favourite
things about
BlackBerrys has to be
BBM free messaging.
But what do you do
if your friends have
iPhones or Android mobiles?
Well the answer’s simple … WhatsApp!
It works in pretty much the same way
as BBM – once you have connected with
your friends you can exchange messages,
videos and images all day, every day and
it won’t cost you a dirham.
TuneIn Radio
Bored of your music
collection? Want
something new to
listen to? TuneIn
Radio lets you tune into
smaller than that of the Torch, watching
videos and flipping through our photos was
just as easy.
The quick photo key to the side of the
device is also really handy: just push it
twice and you have your snap!
With its oversized keyboard, flush function
keys and scrolling bar the Bold 9900 just
feels slicker than past models. There are no
clunky buttons, just clean, smooth surfaces.
Also, despite its lighter weight
the Bold feels sturdier than
previous models with its
reassuring metal casing.
Let’s face it, we all drop our
phones from time to time,
and we’ve all been there to
see our phone shatter into
a million pieces only to need
some lengthy reassembling.
Not so with the Bold, which
happily bounced across the car
park the other day and emerged
without a scratch.
Pros: Light, easy to use and stylish.
What more could a girl ask for?
Cons: A smaller screen. That’s all we
could think of.
We say: We love it!

covering everything from sports talk to
classical music. The app lets you rewind
and record live radio and best of all you
don’t even need to plug your headphones
in to act as a receiver.
Opera Mini web browser
This is a lovely little app that essentially
compresses webpages so they load
faster and saves you
money on data

Opera uses as little
a tenth of the data
of normal browsers.
With a sleek, user-friendly interface and
built-in Twitter and facebook support,

Student donates hair for charity
Sarah Al Mazrouei is a five-year-old girl
who attends the American International
School, Abu Dhabi (AISA). Sarah has been
growing her hair since she was two years
old and recently had it cut short with the
intention to donate it to Locks of Love.
This is an organisation that makes wigs
for children who have suffered hair loss
through illness or stress.
After making sure her hair was the
required ten inches long, she had it cut
and is delighted and proud that she will be
helping others in need.
She has shared her experience with her
classmates showing them photographs of

the process and the very special ponytail
of hair. The ponytail will be sent to the USA
where it will find a new owner and Sarah
now plans to grow her hair again and help
another child in the future.
As her teacher, I am incredibly proud
of Sarah’s actions at such a young age
and her compassion for other children
who are experiencing difficult times
in their lives. Her actions have been
celebrated recently at the school when
she received a special certificate from Mr

GEMS students send funds to Africa
GEMS World Academy students have
raised AED 1,988 to be spent on building a
school in an African slum.
The initiative is a part of the Kibera
project, which is supported by GEMS
International Schools and the Varkey
GEMS Foundation and is meant to raise
money and awareness to rebuild a school
in the slum of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Varkey GEMS Foundation is the
philanthropic arm of GEMS Education.
Kibera is located in the Kenyan Capital
of Nairobi and is Africa’s largest slum,
housing close to half a million people all
living in challenging circumstances; and its
resident’s only hope in breaking the cycle
of poverty is to ensure the children receive
an education.
The students at GEMS World Academy
from K1 to Grade 3 (age three to nine)
held a Market Day. During the school
week, the children designed and made
items such as bookmarks, pet rocks,
wobbles, pencil toppers and also baked
goods to be sold among each other during
Market Day, which took place in April.

A woman in a man’s world
This week Gulizar Jonian, Canadian-Armenian businesswoman, charity worker, social butterfly and the
capital’s first female architect, took time off from her busy schedule to meet with Abu Dhabi Week
What are you involved with at
the moment?
I am currently the director of an architectural
firm that has over 40 employees and
numerous projects in the UAE, Qatar
and Northern Iraq. I supervise the dayto-day
running of the office and oversee
the projects on both technical and
administrative levels.
Other than this, I am the Chairwoman
of Women’s Excellence Group (WEG) and
Abu Dhabi Armenian Ladies Committee,
a committee member of the International
Business Women’s Group (IBWG) and
I actively support various local and
international charities. But most important
of all, I am the mother of one beautiful
daughter called Anushka.
What helped you to become such a
successful businesswoman?
Well, my parents always encouraged me and
never doubted my abilities. I realised a long
time ago that you never stop learning – you
learn from everything and everyone.
Furthermore, I have an undeniable sense
of perseverance and determination. I always
keep going until I reach my target or get as
close as possible.
That said, I do not see failure as a negative
thing; I look at it as a learning experience.
Failure teaches us how to be better prepared
the second time around. I always give
everything my best and if it does not work,
then I simply just bounce back and try again.
You first arrived in Abu Dhabi in the 1970s.
That must have been interesting...
It was December 1976, I was in my twenties
and had been working in London. The UAE
had so much potential and my firm asked
me to explore the area. I spent three months
doing research in Abu Dhabi and I was
soon thereafter made partner. We opened a
branch here and my office was located in the
Sheraton Hotel.
In the 1970s I really was a woman in a
man’s world – the construction industry
was so male-orientated. I remember when
I went to renew the office license the
administrator simply looked through the pile
of applications and picked out the one with a
photo of a female!
The people here were not used to dealing
with a woman on such an executive level
in my profession. It was a very challenging
time, but I knew that I simply had to make it
work. For a woman to succeed, she needed
to try harder than the other gender.
When businessmen would see me
walk into a meeting, they would smile
and chuckle at first, even start flirting! But
by always looking the person in the eye
and maintaining a composed and serious
demeanour, I was respected and treated
professionally in return. It impressed them
actually. Always remember that you reap
what you sow.
With fellow partners, I went on to open
two flower shops in the Sheraton and Hilton
Hotels respectively, a Chinese restaurant
in the Novotel hotel (as it was called at the
time) and a gift shop.
What advice do you have for women
setting up a business here in Abu Dhabi?
That depends on the type of business you
want to set up, whether it is a consultancy
practice, retail store or a branch of an
overseas existing business etc. But in all
cases there are certain steps and general
rules to adhere to.
If you are an expat, get your qualifications
attested in your home country and then
from the local authorities here.
Visit a lawyer in the emirate, because
you need to familiarise yourself with the
regulations of this country. Visit your local
Municipality and Chamber of Commerce to
familiarise yourself with the protocol. Ask
advice on how and where to register your
business, find out if you need to have a local
business partner and if that person needs to
be a full partner or a sponsor. Even the name
you want to use for your company needs to
be checked with the Municipality to see if
it’s acceptable and available.
You must have a carefully thought out
business plan. If you plan to sell a certain
product, do research to see if it is saleable.
Also, find out who your competitors are
and if you have found a niche in the market.
It is necessary to have a certain amount of
money in the bank in order to set up. Visit a
bank to find out what is involved and what
facilities they can offer you. Go to more than
one bank – shop around. And finally, believe
in yourself!

Future Centre
receives Gala funds
The Future Centre for Special Needs
was presented with a cheque for AED
500,000 from its recent fund raising gala
dinner, which was held on the 15th March
2012 at Residence
Gardens of the
British Embassy.
This annual
event, held
under the
Patronage
of HE Sheikh
Nahayan Mabarak
Al Nahyan, Minister
of Higher Education and Scientific
Research, raises funds to provide
special education and rehabilitation to
young individuals with disabilities, like
autism, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy,
hearing impairment, specific learning
disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD and
other developmental disorders.
The money that was collected from
the recent gala dinner will go a long way
towards improving the centre’s facilities
and programmes.
Students speak out
against animal abuse
Exhibition of projects open to public
We are a group of students at the American
International School of Abu Dhabi, and we
are doing a huge project called Exhibition.
Our names are Zaid Deus, Zainab Owais,
Huda Mahmoud and Mattheus Walcher.
Exhibition is when groups of Grade 5
students pick a world issue and make a
project about it. Our group has chosen to
research animal abuse. Animal abuse is a
serious world issue that must be stopped.
There is a festival in Ohio, United States
called Snapper Fest. It is a horrible festival
where people kill Snapper Sea Turtles. They
yank turtles’ heads, crack their shells open
and have races which use the same turtle
causing it to have a slow, painful death
being thrown around. The next one is on
20th August 2012!
Neglect is another horrible thing. This
is when people don’t care for their pets.
They starve them so much that you can
see the pet’s ribs, or they feed them too
much food and they develop fat deposits.
We would say if you don’t care for your
pet, give them to someone else or to SAD
(Strays of Abu Dhabi).
Animal abuse has many forms, from
open cruelty to quiet neglect. We ask
anyone who witnesses any form of animal
abuse to report it right away to the proper
authorities. Animal abuse is considered
haram (forbidden) in Islam. It is a terrible,
barbaric thing to do and we should stop it!!
Our projects will be on display at the
school on 16th and 17th May and it is open
to the public.
AIS Students
Parents learn to play the United way
The Manchester United Soccer
Schools in Abu Dhabi has proved a
massive hit with thousands of children,
and now the school’s coaches are taking it
one step further with special sessions for
the childrens’ parents – a first in the UAE.
A brand new five-week course has
just kicked off at the Dome@Rawdhat
on Airport Road after overwhelming
feedback from parents who wanted to
become more involved in the sessions
and be put through their paces by the
accredited MUSS coaches.
“So many parents told us they wanted
the opportunity to get actively involved
on a more regular basis so we have
developed this unique programme
just for them,” said Andy Dixon, head
coach at MUSS. “The new programme
gives parents a greater insight into the
MUSS philosophy of promoting active,
healthy lifestyles and brings the growing
Manchester United family in the UAE
even closer together.”
Taking place every Tuesday at the
Dome@Rawdhat, the next MUSS parent
programme starts on 22nd May and
is offered exclusively to parents with
children currently registered on the
MUSS programme.
All parents who sign up have the
opportunity to take part in the MUSS
skills challenge competition, just like their
children, as well as the chance to win
signed Manchester United merchandise.
One parent will also win a free place
for their child on the upcoming MUSS
summer course, which starts on 24th
June offering four-day intensive courses
for four consecutive weeks at the indoor
air-conditioned pitches.
For more information about the
MUSS programme, visit
www.manutdsoccerschools.ae or

Quick eats on Yas
Hickory’s
We’ve told you about this Yas Links
favourite before, but we’re not sure
whether we mentioned the delicious
calamari on the starter menu or the
tasty cheese quesedillas? Both are ready
in a flash and make the perfect snack,
particularly if you just fancy a bite or two
with a glass of cold white grape while you
soak in the view of the pristine greens.
Contact: 02 810 7710
Yotto
If you fancy a light bite, you can’t go
wrong with a sashimi selection from
Cipriani’s Japanese restaurant at Yas
Marina Yacht Club. Whether catching
up with a friend you haven’t seen for
ages or aiming to impress a first date,
the intimate dining room at Yotto will
provide the perfect backdrop. The sushi
is a real treat as well – we adore the soft
shell crab maki and the prawn tempura is
awesome. Contact: 02 657 5400
Y-Bar
While the evenings are still cool enjoy
a snack and an aperitif on the terrace at
Yas Island Rotana. There are plenty of
big comfortable sofas to relax into while
you nibble away. We’re huge fans of the
Wagyu burger, but you may not want to
move for a few hours after putting one of
these away. Contact: 02 656 4000
Something old,
something new
There’s nothing quite like a bit of posh
pub grub – bistro-style – and nowhere
delivers up hearty plates of comfort food
quite like Stills at Crowne Plaza on Yas
Island. We trotted along to try out a few
new additions to the menu.
Sat on the huge terrace at Stills, it’s easy
to simply work your way through the bar
bites menu and fill up on yummy treats like
honey mustard chicken strips and chunky
fries, but we suggest getting comfortable
and exploring the main menu instead.
If you’re still after a quick bite before
a show or you’re pushed for time before
meeting friends, why not share a delicious
plate of warm gooey Camembert with fresh
garlic bread? Trust us, it is to die for!
Not a fan of cheese? Then try the duck
liver parfait – served with light, fluffy
toasted ciabatta, this rich pâté literally
melts in the mouth. If you’re with a large
group of friends these tasty new additions
also serve as perfect sharing plates as a
starter to the main event.
going out
Moving on to the next course it took a
lot of persuading to entice us away from
our favourite baked salmon with white
bean cassoulet, but our arm was twisted
in the end. Instead we opted for the new
slow-roasted shoulder of lamb. Normally
we’re not huge fans of this cut of meat
as it can be a little sticky in texture.
We’re pleasantly surprised when instead
we enjoy each mouthful of wonderfully
tender meat. The accompanying gravy
is rich and packed with flavour from the
joint, but not overpowering. We have to
confess we ended up mopping up the
remaining gravy with a piece of bread – it
really was that tasty.
After a very long break we finally
managed to find room for dessert and yet
again we were on the hunt for something
new. It was a toss up between our old
favourite, the sticky toffee pudding
and the new crème brulee with fresh
raspberries and handmade shortbread –
we opted for both!
That’s not all! Don’t miss the Stills
Uncorked (grape and cheese) night. Guests
can enjoy unlimited grape beverages and
cheese from 6pm to 9pm every Tuesday for
AED 110++ per person.

Go, go, go!
We spent many enjoyable weekends in
Hemingway’s when we first arrived in the
UAE but haven’t been there for a while, which
is why we decided that a return visit to our
old haunt was long overdue.
On arrival we are greeted by a friendly
waiter and seated in the non-smoking dining
section, toward the back of the pub. Here we
have the best of both worlds, we enjoy the live
music but it doesn’t interrupt our conversation.
Resident band The Newz, have been
entertaining Hemingway’s patrons since 2010
and it’s easy to see why they remain such a
popular act. The South African duo kick off
the night with their own unique version of
Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Woman!
Following on from that, they belt out familiar
hits including My Girl and I’m a Believer, and
we can’t help but toe-tap and hum along to
Jonny B Goode “Go, go, go Johnny, go.”
The Newz seem equally as comfortable
covering Tina Tuner’s Nutbush City Limits as
they do performing a rendition of Nat King
Cole’s Unforgettable. Part of their charm is
their ability to swiftly switch from country and
western, to jazz or rock.
We begin to feel peckish and have a peek
at the Tex Mex menu. The comprehensive
menu comprising soups, fajitas, nachos,
enchiladas, steak, salad and a tempting
assortment of desserts, impresses us.
The Combo starter sounds too good
not to order: deep fried mozzarella sticks,
chicken wings, calamari and potato skins with
sides of barbeque sauce and sour cream. It
really is a little bit of everything. When the
combo arrives the saying ‘a moment on the
lips, straight to the hips,’ springs to mind
but it looks and tastes so divine, that we
really don’t care! The prawn enchiladas are
also delectable, smothered in homemade
guacamole and a tangy tomato sauce.
Another beauty of Hemingway’s is that it’s
within walking distance to two other venues
should you fancy a change of scenery. Five steps
to the right of the bar and you arrive in Cinnabar
nightclub; walk to the left to reach Jazz Bar.
We are happy where we are, as we sit back,
relax and enjoy the music into the early hours
of the morning.

Join the ultimate summer camp
Shababna wa Shebna Summer Camp welcomes parents and children
Altaaat Leadership Development
Institute has teamed up with the TDIC
team at Desert Islands to offer a one-ofa-kind
Summer Camp programme on Sir
Bani Yas Island.
Called Shababna wa Shebna, or Youth
and the Elderly, the camps are primarily
aimed at Emirati youth, but they are open
to all youngsters from every nationality
between the ages of 16 and 21. The thing
that makes this camp unique though,
is that it is designed for parents and
children to enjoy. In fact, organisers are
asking for father and son and mother and
daughter participation.
“We wanted to help to unite youngsters
with their parents,” said Hala Alturki,
partner at the Altaaat Leadership Institute.
“We’re so busy these days that it’s difficult
to spend quality time with our families.
So we came up with the idea of inviting
young adults and their parents to enjoy the
activities we have planned together.”
The Youth & Parent Leadership
Adventure Gateway Camp will see
participants enjoy a host of adventure
activities and competitions throughout
this summer period, with the first camp
starting on 1st June and running for nine
weeks, with different group of campers
each week.
Weekly camps are for four days and
all participants will stay at the luxurious
Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara
on the Sir Bani Yas Island.
The camp will also include a chance
to take part in a structured leadership
development programme, developed by
the Altaaat Institute. Each participant
will then have the option to take an
assessment, which will see them achieve
an internationally recognised qualification.
“This is a really exciting project through
which we aim to focus on education,
community, health and wellness,
adventure and environmental awareness,”
said Mayssaa Cahltaf, manager of
Organizational Development and Learning
at the Altaaat Leadership Institute.
Walk for leukemia sufferers
Join the Circle of Life candlelit walk for
leukemia at the Aldar HQ building at Al
Raha Beach on Friday 11th May from 6.30pm
to 9pm. The walk will start with the angelic
sounds of the Tri-M/Choir group of ACS,
to raise awareness for leukemia and the
importance of bone marrow donation.
Leukemia, unfortunately, is the most
common type of cancer kids get diagnosed
with. For a lot of kids with leukemia, it is
critical to find a bone marrow match, but
sadly bone marrow banks are in short
supply, particularly in the Middle East. Join
Circle of Life to show your support for this
critical cause, and help make a difference in
someone’s life.
The cost of the camp – AED 8,250 for
individuals and AED 16,500 for parent
and child – includes transportation,
accommodation, all meals and activities as
well as entry into the structured leadership
course. For more information and to register
your interest, please email: booking@
shababnashebna.com, call: 056 782 1515 or
visit www.shababnashebna.com.
Totts tee off at Fanr
Youngsters that could one day be the
next superstars of golf recently took part in
Fanr Restaurant’s Totts & Tees event.
Totts & Tees is a new promotion for
aspiring little ones to learn how to play
golf in a fun-filled, free-of-charge session.
The event was led by two Saadiyat
Beach Golf Club professionals using special
kids golf equipment on the lawns of Fanr
Restaurant. The hour-long session saw the
tiny totts teeing off with multi-coloured
tennis balls and practising their technique
through fun activities and games.
Totts & Tees is a Troon Golf Middle
East initiative to grow the game of golf
and help keep children active through
fun sports events.
To register for next month’s session and
for further details call 02 657 5888.

Prolonged Proposal
The Five-Year Engagement – Dir
Nicholas Stoller, starring Jason Segel,
Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt
If you’re looking for a romantic comedy that
won’t make you want to claw your eyes out,
we’ve got a solution! Reuniting the director
and writer/star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall,
we feel like we’re in good hands for this
comedic gem – and it turns out we’re right!
This rom-com starts where most films
end, the engagement. Tom Solomon (Segel)
proposes to his girlfriend of one year, Violet
Barnes (Blunt) and after a happy yes, the
real problems start when the engagement
gets put on hold, over and over again.
More about a relationship in progress,
this film is refreshing, funny and a rather
honest look at sacrifices. Solomon, an upand-coming
chef, moves to Michigan with
Violet after her acceptance to a graduate
programme in Social Psychology. Putting
wedding bells on hold, the pair repeatedly
jar when new opportunities arise and longterm
choices must be made.

1925 - 1990
Filled with witty one-liners and a little
bit of sass, the chemistry between Tom
and Violet is electric. And of course,
no Apatow-produced film would ever
be complete without some ridiculous
supporting characters that play a part in
some laugh-out-loud gags. The ending may
drag a teensy bit, but we couldn’t help but
be smitten by this romance.

We love living in a country that boasts
a low crime rate and feeling safe walking
down the street any time of day or night.
So we signed up for self-defence lessons
more out of curiosity than necessity.
The Muay Thai and Capoeira Sports
Club is located in a dingy, rundown
building off Al Najda Street. However don’t
let first appearances put you off – what it
lacks in décor it certainly makes up for in
quality of lessons.
Our instructor Yasser introduced the
combat sport Muay Thai to Abu Dhabi in
2007, and he claims to be the only Muay
Thai teacher in the capital.
He explains that people practice this
mixed martial art for many reasons:
fitness, weight loss, self-defence or to
become a professional fighter.
We watch and then imitate Yasser’s
movements, starting with warm-up
stretches followed by a cardio workout.
We do a combination of skipping, pressups,
sit-ups and jumping jacks.
Next Yasser demonstrates how we can
use our hands, elbows, knees and feet
to deliver a blow to our opponent. We
learn the correct stance and how to move
around and punch, while shielding our face
and stomach.
We clench our fists and hold them in
front of our face with our head lowered
and chin tucked in. Apparently one of the
most painful places to strike an opponent
is their chin because the pain will radiate
throughout their jaw.
Wearing pink, padded boxing-gloves we
practice throwing punches at Yasser’s chin
using our left fist while holding our right
fist in front of our face.
“Now your face is protected but your
stomach is not so I could easily kick you in
the stomach,” Yasser tell us. Oh dear! We
definitely don’t like the sound of that. To
avoid kicks to the stomach we are taught
to move our body to the side while we
punch. It takes a little practice but we get
there in the end.
After that it’s time for some footwork.
We learn to step forwards, backwards
and to the side using precise, controlled
movements. The aim is to tire out and
confuse our opponent.
We learned a lot from out first Muay Thai
lesson and while we don’t intend to start
picking fights with strangers, we have learnt
a few useful tricks should we ever be forced
to defend ourself.

Comedians
come to town
Abu Dhabi Week
got a chance
to speak with
Stephen Frost
about the
upcoming Who’s
Line Is It Anyway?
What is your definition of funny?
Originality combined with surprise and
volume. That’s the official scientific formula,
you know.
What makes you laugh?
Scientists and people falling over.
How do you find performing in Abu Dhabi?
Do you ever have to tone down your
material to suit regional sensibilities?
Abu Dhabi has a great lively crowd with good
suggestions. And the weather is great! We
always adapt the show to where we are but
we never set out to be offensive. It’s not that
type of a show – it’s all about having fun.
What can the audience expect from your show?
Fast, furious and funny stuff non-stop,
made-up nonsense, songs, skits, occasional
dancing and maybe even some acrobatics!
What does each of your colleagues bring
to the performance?
Ashdown can sing and play the piano
and he’s funny. Smart is smart and funny.
Coppinger is short and funny. Steen is quick
and funny. Frost (me) is tall, handsome,
sophisticated and very, very funny.
Whose Line is it Anyway? will be hosted
on Monday 14th May at 8pm at the
InterContinental Abu Dhabi Auditorium,
tickets cost AED 150. For more information
call: 800 - IC DINE (800 423 463).

NEWS
APi CAE Gourmet launches
Better Bread campaign
Win a month’s supply of yummy Italian loaves
Italian restaurant APi CAE Gourmet
has launched a campaign to get people
across Abu Dhabi eating better bread.
APi CAE staff will distribute 1,000
loaves of the chef’s freshly baked bread
throughout the city, followed by a monthlong
run of activities – from school visits to
question and answer sessions with the chef.
APi CAE’s bread is baked in line with
traditional methods using slow-acting
sourdough yeast. This process takes much
longer than mass production, making the
bread more naturally digestible in the
stomach. The bread also stays fresher for
longer due to the absence of synthetic
yeast accelerants and contains less salt
than other alternatives.
Bread chef at APi CAE, Giovanni,
explained the importance of understanding
what really goes into your bread. “Bread
forms the cornerstone of the diet in many
cultures throughout the world and has
done for many hundreds of years,” he
said. “In the desire to mass produce bread
quickly, shortcuts have accelerated the
bread-making process to the detriment of
wellbeing and nutrition.
“At APi CAE our philosophy is about
going back to basics. We use slow acting
yeast that needs days of nurturing in order
to proof properly. The resulting bread is
healthier, tastier and much longer lasting.”
WIN!
A month’s supply
of fresh bread from
APi CAE Gourmet!
Abu Dhabi Week and APi CAE
Gourmet have teamed up to offer
one lucky reader a month’s supply
of fresh, tasty, traditional bread that
the lucky winner can pick up from the
restaurant each week.
To enter, answer this question:
What kind of yeast does APi CAE
Gourmet use in their bread?
A: sourdough
B: sweetdough
C: Do-do
How to win: go to www.AbuDhabiWeek.ae/
competition, click on the link and fill in the entry
form online before 12pm on Wednesday 16th May.
It’s that easy! Only one entry per person, please.
Gergana Konova, co-founder of APi CAE,
said: “Bread is one of those food items
which has become stigmatised for being
unhealthy, but originally it formed the heart
of a healthy meal. We want people to bake
more at home and make informed decisions
about the type of bread they eat.”

CAE Gourmet Facebook page or contact:
