BSY files petition
against guvʼs order
Bangalore Beat Bureau
Bangalore: Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa
today upped his ante
against governor H R Bhardwaj,
who gave permission for his prosecution
in land scam cases.
Yeddyurappa today filed a writ
petition before the Karnataka High
Court, claiming that the permission
given for his prosecution by the
governor is against the Constitution.
It is nothing but a conspiracy
hatched against the chief minister
to pull down the government, he
has stated.
Bhardwaj gave permission to
advocates K N Balaraj and Sirajin
Basha to proceed with cases against
the chief minister. The two lawyers
have charged in their petition before
the Lokayukta special court
that the chief minister has misused
his powers to denotify lands illegally
and he and his family members
are involved in many land-related
scandals.
Yeddyurappa’s son-in-law approached
the high court and
brought a stay against hearing in
the case. In reply, the two advocates
went to the Supreme Court, which
refused to interfere and stated that
the matter rested with the high
court. The high court conducted
hearings and reserved the judgment
on vacating the stay on the
proceedings in the case at the
Lokayukta court.
Some farmers want Posco
Bangalore Beat Bureau
Bangalore: A delegation of farmers
from Gadag district who are for
acquisition of lands for the Posco
steel plant today met major industries
minister Murugesh Nirani and
asked him not to back out of the
project.
More than 50 farmers were in the
delegation and were from Mundargi
taluk of Gadag district. They
said they are ready to let go of
their lands, provided they are given
good compensation and their
demands are fulfilled.
They told the state government
that they are giving their land as
they wanted the area to develop industrially.
Nirani told them that since there
was a lot of pressure from farmer
leaders, seers and others, the government
has decided not to take up
the project in Mundargi. “The chief
minister has already stated that the
government would not go ahead
with the project. The government

has dropped the proposal to acquire
land for the project from the
area. Since the delegation has
come and met me, I can put across
their demand before the chief minister

Many math heads, headed by
Thontadarya Math seer Siddalinga
Swamiji, today held a meeting and
asked the government to give the
proposal to drop the project in
writing.
They alleged that Posco is a
blacklisted company.

Mumbai: An electric circuit has been
found on one of the bodies recovered after
the serial bombings, a top doctor at
the J J Hospital said here today. This has
given rise to the theory that the blasts, are
one of the blasts, could have been triggered
by a suicide bomber.
The information has been shared

have been used to trigger one of the
blasts, was found outside the victim's
body.
At least 17 people were killed and 131
injured in the triple blasts that rocked the
city last evening. J J Hospital is one of the
13 hospitals where the victims of the blast
were rushed to.
Union home minister P Chidambaram

Pet owners
are happier,
healthier
Washington: Even people who aren’t struggling
with illness can benefit from the emotional support
provided by pets, said a study.
Researchers also found evidence to dispel the
notion people’s relationships with their pets
come at the cost of their ties with other humans,
according to the study published online by the
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
“We observed evidence that pet owners fared
better, both in terms of well-being outcomes and
individual differences, than non-owners on several
dimensions,” study co-author Allen Mc-
Connell, of Miami University in Ohio, said in a
statement.
“Specifically, pet owners had greater self-esteem,
were more physically fit, tended to be less
lonely, were more conscientious, were more extroverted,
tended to be less fearful and tended to
be less preoccupied than non-owners,” the researcher
said.
Researchers studied three different groups,
the largest of which comprised 217 people, both
pet owners and non-owners. The group was 79 percent
female, with a median age of 31 and median
household income of $77,000 a year.
“The present work presents considerable evidence
that pets benefit the lives of their owners,
both psychologically and physically, by serving as
an important source of social support”, the study
says, noting that previous research had “focused
primarily on pet owners facing significant health
challenges”. IANS
People drawn to
individuals in a
similar league
London: It’s said that opposites attract when it
comes to love. But, a new study has found that
more often partners are drawn to individuals
who have personality traits much similar to that
of their own.
Researchers at University of California, Berkeley
found that people are attracted to potential romantic
partners if they are of their own or similar
league and desirability, which they called the
“matching hypothesis”, the Daily Mail reported.
For their research, the authors of the study
turned to online dating sites and measured the
popularity of more than 3,000 heterosexual users
of a site. Popularity was defined by the number of
opposite-sex individuals who had sent unsolicited
messages to a user.
Analyses indicated that high-popularity users
contacted other popular users at a rate greater than
would be expected by chance.
Similarly, the less popular users of the site also
contacted other low-popularity users.
The researchers then conducted a follow-up
study of more than a million users and found a similar
result – when it comes to dating, potential
mates stick to someone in their own league.
“Individuals on the dating market will assess
their own self-worth and select partners whose social
desirability approximately equals their own,”
the authors wrote.
Using data collected in the laboratory and
from users of a popular online dating site, the authors
found evidence for matching based on selfworth,
physical attractiveness, and popularity, but
to different degrees and not always at the same
stage of the dating process. “The most striking prediction
is that undesirable individuals will choose
undesirable partners,” they added. PTI

Are you feeling numbness in
hand? Have you met with an accident
in recent past injuring
your hand? Do you feel nagging
pain in your wrist with repeated
and unending tapping on computer keyboard?
The answer to all these questions
lies in visiting a good hand care doctor for
specialised treatment.
Just to treat such cases, exclusively related
to hands, a specialty hospital was
opened – Bangalore Hand Care Hospital –
last week.
Founder-proprietor of the hospital, Dr
Bharat K Kadadi, says, “Though there are
many orthopaedic hospitals, I felt the city
needed an exclusive hospital to deal with
hand-related injuries and diseases one
might frequent.”
Dr Bharat K Kadadi, who is a wellknown
orthopaedic surgeon, and his wife
Dr Maya KT have started the hospital. Dr
Kadadi has worked at various leading
hospitals in the city, including Suguna and
Hosmat, for more than six years now. He
is a consulting surgeon at various hospitals
in Chennai and Coimbatore. He is specially
trained in brachial plexus and related
hand injuries at Yamagachi Medical University
in Tokyo.
“Brachial plexus is numbness of hands
and fingers. Patients, who would have
suffered hand injury, experience numbness
of the hand and fingers. They normally ignore
it and go through ordinary treatment.
But there could be more serious injury
and a patient has to go through specialised
treatment if the pain persists.
These cases need surgery and one can find
relief only after the procedure. It does not
take much time to perform the operation
and a patient can go home within six
hours of surgery.”
When Bangalore Beat asked Dr Kadadi
on cases related to hand injury which he
has operated upon and the common injuries
that are surfacing these days, he said,
“Nowadays, many people in the city suffer
from computer related and stress inflicted
disease, like carpal tunnel syndrome, because
of the constant use of computers
without caring for the hand and body.”
“But most of the patients I have treated
are those with disfigured hands due to
nerve damage. We can treat such patients
even if half the hand is lost. If there are
donors, it is possible to join the new hand
within six hours,” Dr Kadadi said.
“The task is not easy and the procedure
is complicated. But we can see that
everything is fine depending on the donors
and how the recipient’s body accepts the
organ.”
Global warming: Cities,
too, are carbon sinks
Paris: Scientists offered a slender piece of
good news about global warming, reporting
that cities can be of surprising help in
soaking up carbon dioxide (CO2), the principal
greenhouse gas.
Around 4 percent of the world’s land surface
is defined as urbanised, a figure expected
to surge as the planet’s human
population rises from seven billion this year
to as much as 9.5 billion by mid-century.
But unlike forests, urban areas are absent
in most calculations of “sinks” where vegetation
soaks up CO2 naturally thanks to
photosynthesis.
A new study, though, says the contribution
can be significant.
British scientists carried out their survey
on the central English city of Leicester,
which has a population of around 300,000
living in an area of 73 sqkm.
They measured the carbon-absorbing
capacity of its parks, domestic gardens,
abandoned industrial land, golf courses,
school playing fields, road verges and river
banks.
They found that 231,000 tonnes of carbon
were locked up this way, 10 times more than
expected. It is roughly equal to the average
annual emissions of more than 150,000 saloon,
also called sedan, cars.
“Currently, once land in the UK is considered
to be urban, its biological carbon

density is assumed to be zero,” said researcher
Zoe Davies of the University of
Kent, southeast England.
“Our study illustrates this is not the case
and that there is a substantial pool of carbon
locked away in the vegetation within a
city.”
Urban “sinks” are not by themselves a solution
to the billions of tonnes of carbon
emitted globally but can help mitigate
their impact, especially if gardeners grow
trees, which absorb far more CO2 than
grass and shrubs, she said.
In the case of Leicester, most of the publicly-owned
or -managed land in the city
comprises lawns. But if just 10 percent of this
land were planted with trees, the city’s carbon
storage would leap by 12 percent.
“If more trees are planted in urban areas
for their carbon storage value, they must be
the right kind of tree planted in the right
place so that they have a long, productive
lifespan, and when trees die they should be
replaced,” Davies cautioned.
Trees have an additional benefit of lowering
the temperature locally, providing
shade. In contrast, asphalt roads and buildings
store solar radiation during the day, encouraging
the creation of “urban heat islands”
that can add dangerously to the effect
of heatwaves on human health.
The new study appears in the Journal of
Applied Ecology, published by the British
Ecological Society. AFP
Children exposed to
passive smoke prone
to neurotic problems
Boston: Children who grow up exposed
to second-hand smoke are more likely to
suffer from neurobehavioural disorders like
learning disabilities, lack of concentration
and hyperactivity, according to a new
study by Harvard researchers.
Researchers, led by the Harvard School
of Public Health, have found that children
who grow up among parents or family
members who smoke, are 50 per cent
more likely of having at least two of the
three disorders, namely a learning disability,
behavioural or conduct problem
and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD).
Among kids who lived with a smoker,
20.4 per cent or one in five had been diagnosed
with at least one neurobehavioural
condition.
The study revealed that boys are at a
higher risk than girls of getting these disorders.
The researchers believed that such
disabilities could be prevented if children
are not exposed to active or passive
smoke.
Of the sample size of 55,000 children under
the age of 12 being surveyed, about six
per cent were exposed to passive smoke,
corresponding to about 4.8 million children
nationwide.
Older children, especially those aged 9
to 11 years, and those living in households
with the highest poverty levels were also
at greater risks in developing these disorders.
ADHD is a long-term, chronic condition.
If it is not treated appropriately, ADHD may
lead to drug and alcohol abuse among children.
A child with neurotic disorder is likely
to fail to give close attention to details
or tends to makes careless mistakes at
school work.
A child is likely to develop poor listening
skills, lack of concentration, become
forgetful, easily distracted, fidgety, talkative
and impatient. PTI
Your brain has moral hold on you
Washington: Unbeknownst to you, your
brain might have a hidden agenda – discouraging
you to stray from the narrow path
to rectitude.
It does so by simulating physical sensations
to prompt introspection, capitalising
on moments when your emotions
might be intense.
Mary Helen Immordino of the University
of Southern California (USC) Brain and
Creativity Institute, found that individuals
who were told stories to evoke compassion
and admiration for virtue, sometimes reported
that they felt a physical sensation in
response.
These psycho-physical “pangs” of emotion
are very real – they can be ascertained
with brain scans – and may be evidence
that pro-social behaviour is part of human
survival, reports the journal Emotion Review.
Immordino’s hypothesis is that the feeling
or emotional reactions in the body may
sometimes prompt introspection. They
can ultimately promote moral choices and
motivation to help or emulate others, according
to a Southern California statement.
“These emotions are foundational for
morality and social learning. They have the
power to change the course of your very
life,” Immordino said.
In one instance, a participant responded
to a story of a little boy’s selflessness toward
his mother by reporting that he felt
like there was a “balloon or something under
my sternum, inflating and moving up
and out.”
While pondering this physical sensation,
the participant paused for a moment and
considered his own relationship with his
parents.
Ultimately, he voiced a promise to express
more gratitude toward them. Researchers
noted similar reactions in varying
degrees in other participants’ tests.
Immordino’s team has performed about
50 of these qualitative analyses in Beijing
and at USC.
She said: “We are an intensely
social species. Our very biology is a
social one.”
“For centuries poets have described socalled
gut feelings during social emotions.
Now we are uncovering the biological evidence,”
she added. IANS

THE MAYA OF MONEY
Money gives one a sense of freedom
and ownership.
Ownership of something means
total control of its existence. When
we buy a piece of land, we feel that
we own it, although the land continues
to exist even after the owner is no
more. How can we own something
that outlives us?
Money also gives the idea that
we are powerful and independent,
blinding us to the fact that we live in
a world of interdependence. We
believe that with money we can
own anything, that we can put a
price tag on anybody’s services.
We depend on farmers, cooks,
drivers and the services of so
many people around us. Even an
expert surgeon cannot operate by himself.
He depends on others. By paying
a few currency notes, we overlook the
fact that we depend on them. Instead
of feeling grateful we think it is we
Sugarcane
farmers want
factories to
clear dues
Bangalore: Sugarcane farmers
from southern parts of the state
gathered for a one-day interactive
session yesterday and pressed
for payments due from sugar
factories. They also wanted better
price for their produce.
Members of the State Sugarcane
Growers’ Association of
Mysore will discuss with agriculture
and horticulture minister
A Ravindranath issues of pricing
for the next year. They will also
hold discussions with Govinda
Reddy, secretary, South Indian
Sugar Mills’ Association (SIS-
MA).
Those who attended yesterday’s
session said that the state
stood third in the production of
sugarcane in the country, after
Maharashtra and Punjab. Last
year, the state recorded 336 lakh
tonnes of sugarcane. The farmers,
who had gathered at Legislators’
Home, wanted the state government
to make its stand clear on
the pricing.
They said for every tonne of
production of sugarcane they incur
a cost of Rs 2,249.57. If grown
properly, they can produce 35 to
40 tonnes per acre.
Govinda Reddy said, “While
we know that sugar farmers are
at a disadvantageous position
on the pricing front. Last year,
farmers got Rs 1,800 per tonne.
This year, we have discussed it
with ISMA where some farmer
representatives, like Kodihalli
Cahndrashekar of Mysore, Puttanna
Gowda of Mandya and
Byatranahalli Madappa were
present. This session has been
constructive and any differences
will be settled at another session
that will be held in the city on
July 16.”
He said sugar prices had
reached Rs 35 per kg, but came
down to Rs 27. “Despite these
variations, we would see that
farmers get the right price. Last
year, the government allowed
export of 46-50 lakh tonnes of
sugar. But this year, it will go
slow,” he added.
Sugarcane Growers’ Association
representatives said, “Production
was good all over the
country last year, including the
state. Maharashtra and Punjab
too recorded a 10 percent increase.
Though it is a good sign,
the farmers had to go through
harrowing times, because of reduced
procurement price. We
will discuss the issue with state
and central governments.”

If we take a look at why most people
with money are arrogant we will find
it is because of the feeling of independence
that money brings. The
awareness of dependence on the other
hand makes one humble. The basic
human quality of humility is taken
away by the false feeling of independence.
Human values have eroded to
such an extent that we measure
people in terms of their net
money worth. Can money really
reflect the worth of a person?
Often we call someone a
millionaire or a billionaire. Labeling
a person so is not a compliment. We
cannot put a value to human life.
Wealth can be attained through
one's skills, abilities, inheritance or
through corrupt means. The means
of attaining wealth brings its own consequences.
The very motive for corruption
is peace and happiness. Yet
peace and happiness remain elusive
when the means are corrupt.
On one hand, some people blame
money for all the ills in society. There
are others who even consider it an
evil. Just as possessing money brings
arrogance, rejecting it too makes one
arrogant. Some people who renounce
money take pride in their poverty to
draw attention and sympathy. However,
the ancient sages never denigrated
money. In fact, they honoured
it as a part of the divine and transcended
the grip of its illusion. They
knew that when we reject or hate
something, we can never transcend
it. They honoured wealth as Goddess
Lakshmi – the consort of Narayana.
In a state of ignorance, people forget
that the most reliable thing in the universe
is ourselves and therefore start
relying on money as a source of security.
When people lack faith in the Divine
or in their own abilities or in the
goodness of society, they suffer from
a deep sense of insecurity. This is a
predominant problem today. As a
result all that appears to provide security
is money. They rely on something
that is not certain, and end up
getting upset. Uncertainty causes craving
for stability.
The world is of change; the Self is
of non-change. We have to rely on
the non-change and accept the change.
This is like perceiving the real as unreal
and unreal as real. In fact, all miseries
are unreal. A wise man knows that
happiness is real, as it is our very nature.
Unhappiness is unreal because
it is inflicted by memory. When we
see everything as a dream, then we
abide in our true nature which is love,
joy and peace. Then we understand
that money is not all important. There
are values, belongingness, love and
care which are more important.

Cathay to
launch
cargo
service
New Delhi: Expanding its cargo
services in India, Cathay Pacific
will begin its bi-weekly operations
from Bangalore next month.
Bangalore will be the fourth
city – after Delhi, Mumbai and
Chennai – from where the Hong
Kong-based airline will operate
its twice-a-week flight with Boeing
747-400F aircraft on the Hong
Kong-Delhi-Bangalore-Hong
Kong sector.
"India is an increasingly important
market for our cargo
business. We are pleased to be
able to extend our services in
the country through the launch
of a freighter service to Bangalore.
This new service will enhance
Cathay's presence in India,"
Cathay Pacific director Nick
Rhodes said in a statement.
The airline expects its service
to attract shipments of computers,
computer components, electronic
goods, integrated circuits,
semi-conductors and garments
from China and neighbouring
countries. The main markets out
of the city would be Japan and
North America with shipments
of cars, auto parts, garments,
pharmaceuticals and textiles.

Qaida plotting
internet jihad
London: Al-Qaida is plotting a jihad on
the internet against Britain and the West,
and has launched teams to target key computer
systems, officials said.
Terrorists have even tried to invade Facebook
in their “campaign of electronic warfare”,
The Sun reported.
The Google Earth and Street View applications
are being used by the terrorists to
plan out atrocities, it said.
Security officials in Britain say cyber terrorism
will become an ever growing threat.
A 123-page counter-terror report said a
special unit – called the Tariq bin Ziyad
Brigades for Electronic Jihad – attacked
computers last year. “Since the death of
Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda has called not
only for acts of lone or individual terrorism
but also for cyber jihad,” it said.
Experts now say there are thousands of
terrorist-related websites, and a “few dozen
are highly influential” and frequented by
terrorists. “Use of social network sites and
video sharing is now commonplace. There
have been a number of attempts by terrorist
and extremist groups to invade Facebook,”

US woman

London: A woman in California allegedly

Catherine Kieu Becker, 48, told police
her husband “deserved it”, The Sun reported.
The 51-year-old husband was in a
serious condition in hospital after having
surgery.
The woman is facing charges of spousal
abuse, the daily said.
One of the first such incidents that gained
notoriety was when John Wayne Bobbitt of
New York was attacked by his wife Lorena

Britain is Europeʼs
top destination
London: More immigrants settle permanently
in Britain than in any other European
country, a study has said.
Nearly 397,900 foreign nationals decided
to live in Britain in 2009, says the study by
the Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development (OECD).
The study said the increase was largely
down to family members coming to stay
with those already in Britain, and the large
number of foreign students, reported the
Daily Mail.
The OECD report – titled “Trends in International
Migration” – found Britain was
one of the few countries where migrant
workers were less likely to end up unemployed
than local people.
Andrew Green, chairman of think-tank
MigrationWatch UK, said the figures showed
Labour made Britain a soft touch for immigration.
“Labour’s loss of control of immigration
has left us with a situation where
our population is growing at the fastest
rate for 50 years,” he said.
The number of permanent migrants in
Britain is exceeded only by the US, where
1.1 million people settled permanently in
2009. France had only 178,700 new settlers
and Germany 197,500. IANS

London: Over one million websites were
closed down in China in 2010, BBC reported.
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences
said there were 41 percent fewer websites
at the end of 2010 than in 2009.
China has tightened regulations on the
internet in recent years, and launched a
crackdown on pornographic websites in
2009.
Liu Ruisheng, a researcher from the academy,
said that despite the declining number
of websites, the number of web pages rose
to 60 billion during 2010.
"This means our content is getting
stronger, while our supervision is getting
more strict and more regulated," he said.
A number of websites such as BBC's Chinese
language service, and social media
sites like Facebook, Youtube and Twitter

I Will go ahead with India
visit: Hillary, post Mumbai
Washington: Hours after the Mumbai
blasts, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton
made it clear that she would go
ahead with her visit to New Delhi next
week for the security dialogue saying it
is more important than ever to stand
with India in the struggle against terrorism.
“We condemn the despicable act of
violence designed to provoke fear and
division. Those who perpetrated it must
know they cannot succeed”, she said.
Reaching out to India, Clinton said
“I will be travelling to India next week
as planned. I believe it is more important

Arthritis genes
discovered
Washington; Scientists have discovered eight arthritis
genes, a key breakthrough which they say could soon
pave the way for the development of effective treatments
for a painful form of the condition.
An international team, led by Queensland University,
claims the discovery will help in understanding the
molecular mechanisms underlying ankylosing spondylitis,
a painful form of arthritis, which fuses bones in
the spine and pelvis.
AS causes the immune system to attack the spinal
and pelvic joints, leading to chronic inflammation.
Unlike other forms of arthritis where inflammation
leads to bone loss, AS results in bone growth and can
consequently cause the spine and pelvis become
fused into a fixed position.
In their research, the scientists, led by Prof Matt
Brown, have identified the eight new genes that help
clarify previously unexplained aspects of AS.
In particular, these genes help explain why bone
formation occurs and why some AS patients also develop
the conditions Inflammatory Bowel Disease
and/or psoriasis, say the scientists.
Professor Matt Brown said the findings shed light
on a 40-year-old genetic mystery. In the 1970s it was
discovered nearly all AS patients carried a particular
gene -- HLA-B27.
According to him, “The link between AS and HLA-
B27 is one of the strongest known genetic associations
of any common disease. However, the precise role
this gene plays in AS has never been clear until now.”
The scientists have discovered that a mutation in a
second gene, ERAP1, only appears in HLA-B27 positive
AS patients. The finding suggests these two genes
work together in AS to disrupt the way the cells in the
spinal and pelvic joints interact with the immune
system.
This, in turn, may help explain the strong immune
reaction seen in AS, and is expected to open up new
avenues in the search for new drug treatments, say
the scientists.
“These crucial findings provide the first confirmation
that in humans, as has been shown in plant and
other animal species, interaction between genes is
important in influencing disease risk,” Prof Brown
said.
The findings are to be published in an upcoming
edition of the ‘Nature Genetics’ journal. PTI

“We have physical ¬evidence
and text messages. We are not

Banon said she did not bring
charges eight years ago because
at that time everyone told her it
would “never succeed”.
But following the ¬allegations
in New York, she thought there
was “perhaps a chance to ¬finally

Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer in

Gonorrhoea now superbug,
may become global threat
London: For the first time,
scientists have found a “superbug”
strain of gonorrhoea,
resistant to all recommended
antibiotics,
which they fear could turn
a once easily treatable sexually-transmitted
disease
into a global public health
threat.
The new strain of the disease,
called H041, was found
in Japan and leaves doctors
with no other option than
to try untested medicines to combat
it.
The analysis of the strain
showed that it was highly resistant
to all cephalosporin-class
antibiotics – the last remaining
drugs still effective in treating
gonorrhoea, the Daily Mail reported.
Magnus Unemo of the Swedish
Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic
Neisseria, who discovered
the strain with colleagues in
samples from Kyoto, described
it as “alarming”.
“Since antibiotics became the
standard treatment for gonorrhoea
in the 1940s, this bacterium
London: What is the point of
sex? Since Charles Darwin’s time,
this question has troubled scientists
around the world. Not,
any more.
Thanks to biologists at the
University of Indiana who claim
to have discovered that animals
reproduce together, rather than
simply cloning themselves, because
it helps them to ward off
parasites, ‘The Daily Telegraph’
reported.
In fact, according to them, the
findings support the evolutionary
theory that blending of two animals’
genomes creates an offspring
with a new genetic code
which may make it more resistant
to attack.
The biologists say they may
have provided the best evidence
yet after engineering two types
of worms, some which could
only reproduce by mating with
each other and some could only
clone themselves.
After exposing them to a harmful
bacteria, worms that reproduced
through sex survived fairly
well while those that were asexual
died rapidly.
Co-author Curtis Lively said:
“The Red Queen Hypothesis predicts
that sex should allow hosts
to evade infection from their parasites,
whereas self-fertilisation
may increase the risk of infection.
“The coevolutionary struggle
between hosts and their parasites
could explain the existence of

Recent studies suggest only 30
per cent of children in England
aged between two and 15 get the

Critics, however, say the report fails
to recognise the difficulties some

those from disadvantaged

Brain implants

Washington: How on earth do
busy nerve cells pick and respond

of information?
Somehow neurons
(nerve cells) do manage
to accomplish
the daunting task,
and they do it with
more finesse than
anyone ever realized,
as new research
by University
of Michigan
shows.
The findings of
mathematician
Daniel Forger and
co-authors add to basic
knowledge about how
neurons work.
It also suggests ways of better
designing the brain implants,
used to treat diseases such as
Parkinson’s, the journal Public
Library of Science Computational
Biology reports.
Forger and co-authors David
Paydarfar at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School
and John Clay at the National
Institute of Neurological Disorders
and Stroke studied neuronal
responses, according to a Michigan
statement.
Among the key findings are
that neurons are adept at their
job. “They can pick out a signal
from hundreds of other similar
signals,” said Forger, research
assistant professor of computational
medicine and bioinformatics.
Neurons discriminate among
signals based on the signals’
“shape,” (how a signal changes
over time), and the authors found
that, contrary to prior belief, a
neuron’s preference depends on
context.
Washington: US President
Barack Obama has condemned
as “outrageous” the attacks in
Mumbai and offered support to
bring the perpetrators of the “terrible
crimes to justice”.
“I strongly condemn the outrageous
attacks in Mumbai,”
Obama said in a statement.
“India is a close friend and
partner of the United States. The
American people will stand with
the Indian people in times of
trial, and we will offer support
to India’s efforts to bring the
perpetrators of these terrible
crimes to justice,” he added.
“During my trip to Mumbai, I
saw firsthand the strength and
resilience of the Indian people,
and I have no doubt that the India
will overcome these deplorable
terrorist attacks,” he
said.
Terror struck Mumbai last
evening when three near simultaneous
blasts ripped through
crowded areas in the city.
Meanwhile, under secretary

Burns called foreign secretary
Nirupama Rao to offer condolences
and support.
“Undersecretary Burns did
speak just a little while ago with
Foreign Secretary Rao to convey
our condolences and to offer our
support, and worth noting as
well that Secretary (of State,
Hillary) Clinton will have an opportunity
to reaffirm our commitment
to the US-India partnership
when she travels there
next week,” State Department
spokesperson Mark Toner told
reporters at his daily news conference.
“The US government
condemns this senseless
violence in the strongest
possible terms. We offer our
condolences to the families and
friends of those affected by this
attack and stand in solidarity
with the people of India and
Mumbai. We offer our full support
and assistance to the government
of India in their response
to and investigation of
the attack,” Toner said.
Toner said it is too far to speculate
at this point of time if there
was any involvement of any Pakistan-based
terrorist outfits or
that of any Pak official as was
the case with 26/11.
“We don’t (have any information
of involvement of Pak officials).
It’s far too early to speculate.
The Indian government will
no doubt begin an investigation
of this incident, and we’ll wait
for their results. And as I said,

lead to infertility. And if it

the condition can be life

The infection, which used
to be known as “the clap”,
is particularly prevalent
among young people aged
16-24 years who accounted
for nearly half of the 16,500
new cases of gonorrhoea reported
in 2008.
Experts say the best way
to reduce the risk of even
greater resistance developing is
to treat gonorrhoea with combinations
of two or more types of
antibiotic at the same time.
However, Unemo said that experience
from previous degrees
of resistance acquired by gonorrhoea
suggested this new multi-drug
resistant strain could
spread around the world within
10 years.
He added that there would
need to be trials to assess whether
carbapenems – known as the
most powerful antibiotics yet devised
– might be a last ditch option
for treating this new gonorrhoea
strain. PTI
“We
found that
neurons can prefer
one signal – call it signal A –
when compared with a certain
group of signals, and a different
signal – call it signal B – when
compared with another group
of signals,” Forger said.
This is true even when signal
A and signal B are not at all
alike.
“We found that the optimal
stimulus is context-dependent.
So the best signal will differ, depending
on the part of the brain
where the implant is placed,”
he said.
“Our results determine the optimal
signals to stimulate a neuron,”
Forger said.
“These signals are much more
effective and require less battery
power than what is currently
used,” he added.
Such efficiency would translate
into less frequent surgery to
replace batteries in patients with
brain implants, according to
Forger. IANS

Sena flays Rahul
over remarks
Mumbai: Shiv Sena today said
it was wrong for Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi to equate Mumbai
terror attacks with those in
Afghanistan.
“We elect you to protect us.
When you compare the Mumbai
attacks to those in Iran, Iraq and
Afghanistan. It is an insult to
those killed in these attacks,”
Sena MP Sanjay Raut said.
A case of treason should be
filed against Rahul Gandhi over
these remarks, he said.
“Rahul does not leave a single
chance to insult Mumbai. When
he says the terror attacks will
continue to happen, it shows
that he is not fit to live in India,”
Raut said. PTI

Rahul not for PM
under Lokpal
Bhubaneswar: Expressing reservation
over bringing the Prime
Minister under the purview of
the Lokpal, Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi today said the
head of government should not
come under the ambit of the ombudsman.
“I think after he quits office,
the Prime Minister should come
under the Lok Pal bill. I have
my concerns over bringing him
within its purview while holding
office,” the AICC general secretary
told reporters here.
Since the Prime Minister is to
lead the nation and run the government,
he should be brought
under Lokpal purview the day
he demits office, Gandhi said.
While describing the Lokpal
Bill and discussions on it as a
good development, Gandhi said
the proposed measure is fundamental,
but it treats the disease
after it happens.
Emphasising on preventive
steps against corruption, the
young Congress leader said, “We
have to think of bringing improvement
in quality of politics
and politicians”.
Stating that corruption has
become a menace as political
parties are not funded, he said
it is necessary to involve the poor
and youngsters in politics.
In order to tackle corruption,
it is essential to change the type
of people in politics and improve
their quality and number, Gandhi
said, adding that though
politics is closed to youngsters
he is building an organisation
to bring more young and
fresh people into the political
system.
Congress is the only political
party which is attracting young
and fresh people to improve the
quality of politics while other
parties still cling on to factors
like political linkages and connections,
he said.

DRUG AUTHORITY
wants better control
ʻCosmetics units too must be under purviewʼ
L Raghunanda
Bangalore Beat Bureau
Bangalore: Some 110 units manufacturing
cosmetics in the state
have to be brought under the
purview Karnataka Drug Control
Authority, said state drug controller
Dr Jagashetty.
Over the next two weeks, the
government and the authority
would decide on a number of
laws and amendments that
would bring better control over
selling and manufacturing of
drugs in the state, he said. “The
talks are already on.”
He hoped two drug examining
centres at Hubli and Dharwad,
whose construction is going on,
would be completed soon.
Frequent media reports about
spurious drugs and cosmetics
are disturbing. “This is because
of noncompliance of cosmetic
and drug manufacturing industries
with the rules in the state.
We want to see where we get
powers to regulate noncompliance
of both cosmetic industries
and spurious drug manufacturers.
We want to train drug examiners
and drug control officers
in our department to deal with
these cases effectively,” he added.
The amendments should be
taken up under Form 13 of the
Drug Control Act. This means,
the authority should be given
powers to declare a drug spurious
even if there is a deviation of 0.5
percent in the constituent chemicals,
he said.
While there are laws to govern
drugs at doctor’s shops and clinics,
the authority should be given
powers to issue periodic licences
to them. “We should also be allowed
to examine the samples
with these doctors and clinics,”
he added.

names in his mind for the female lead. “The
film was specifically written keeping Shahid

Shahid could be part of them or a fresh script
should be written for him? We decided to write
a fresh script and that’s how the birth of
‘Mausam’ took place,” he added. “Mausam”,
a love story, will see Shahid as a pilot and he
has teamed up with Sonam Kapoor in it.
“While writing, there was no girl in my head,
it was the character that was in my head. I

the endeavour is to make an entertaining film,

a certain level of presentation that appeals to
one and all. It will be able to set some kind of
a standard of work,” he said.
He maintains that being an actor himself
had helped him extract exactly what he had
conceived from the lead pair.
