<div>USC Sumter Campus Education News!...<br /> Service Learning Celebration<br /> o celebrate over 1,385-service learning hours accumulated by the Upstate@ Sumter<br /> Student Education Organization, our annual Service Learning Celebration for<br /> T<br /> 2011 will be held October 12 at Noon in the Arts and Letters building. Dr. Marsha Dowell,<br /> Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, will be our keynote speaker! We will also be<br /> recognizing and presenting an award to Barbara Rookstool, a recent USC Upstate graduate<br /> now teaching first grade in our local Sumter school district. Barbara wrote a grant to<br /> the Geographical Alliance which gave Lemira Elementary school interactive maps and a<br /> trip to Riverbanks Zoo for all of the first grade graders. We are excited to also recognize<br /> other service learning activities that have taken place this past year and all our students<br /> who were involved.<br /> Leaders being made in Sumter!<br /> EO has committed to producing leaders. The semester has already started off excellent<br /> with seven committees in place. Each committee is lead by two of our top stu-<br /> S<br /> dents who have been recommended for the position; one an Early Childhood Education<br /> major and the other an Elementary Education major. Our first SEO meeting will happen<br /> Wednesday August 31 where students in the club are able to join a committee. Committees<br /> range from Service Learning, Mentoring, and Grant Writing to Edubabble and<br /> Memories (our newspaper and photography teams). Dr. Mary Leiter is our newest faculty<br /> member and will be helping teach leadership skills to each of these ! We are so excited<br /> to see the goals that each team will write, and what activities they will bring forth for the<br /> club!<br /> Girls on the Run!<br /> ur USC Upstate students on the Sumter campus have been asked by USC Sumter to<br /> O bring a Girls on the Run (GOTR) to our local community! Check out an awesome<br /> article below that they have written to reach out to girls who they will spend 3 hours a<br /> week with for 12 weeks to prepare them for a 5k marathon!<br /> Do you know a third, fourth, or fifth grade girl looking for an interactive program that<br /> teaches lifelong principles? From emotional well being to physical fitness, GOTR brings to<br /> you five trained coaches from your local Sumter community (who are also USC Upstate<br /> Education majors) who will provide each girl with an interactive experience designed to<br /> teach these principles. Through this program, young girls are given access to hands on<br /> activities that will enhance their self-esteems. They are also able to interact with other<br /> girls their age and motivate each other in obtaining physical success by training for a 5k<br /> marathon. Educating and empowering girls at an early age is important in keeping our<br /> rising generation on the right path to success.<br /> We are so excited for what Girls on the Run has in store for our community! These five<br /> girls will be student teaching next semester. Our hope is that next semester, these girls<br /> will then start up a Girls on the Run in their Elementary school. The awards ceremony<br /> which featured Mr. Tyrone Flowers, a St. Louis, Missouri attorney and a<br /> 2010 National TRiO Achiever, was the capstone event that wrapped up a very fruitful year for the program.<br /> With the completion of the regular academic year in May, the summer component started with Upward<br /> Bound students from six area school districts participating in a month-long, residential camp on the Upstate campus.<br /> Six of the graduating seniors kicked the camp off by enrolling in summer school, taking official, college credit courses<br /> to start off their freshman year. All of the students, who are called Bridge students, resided on campus in the Villas.<br /> “This was a great opportunity and a jump start for our students to get a first-hand glimpse of campus life and to get<br /> acclimated to the college environment,” stated Dr. Mitchell, the program director. These students not only attend<br /> classes but they are also afforded the opportunity to attend workshops that teach them how to make an easy transition<br /> from high school to college. Workshops dealt with topics like “The Freshman Fifteen” dealing with physical fitness,<br /> “Young Biz” – a look at financial literacy, and “Meet the Professor” where Dr. Charles Love, Dean of the School<br /> of Education, spoke to the students about professor expectations, the challenges of college life, and the necessary<br /> goals that students must consider in order to be successful.<br /> The other Upward Bound campers moved in the second week of July, participating in orientation and a host<br /> of activities. The first day started with a scavenger hunt which served as a college tour and provided a great introduction<br /> to the campus. “It was the perfect way to teach the students about our campus without them knowing they<br /> were being taught,” said Yolanda Simuel, head counselor of the program. Clues led the students to various department<br /> areas were spokespersons offered information about the services they offer. “We had great participation from<br /> our campus leaders and this made the students feel important and welcomed, so they really paid attention and<br /> learned a lot about Upstate,” stated Latasha Bowser, administrative specialist for Upward Bound. The areas that participated<br /> included: Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Life, Opportunity Network, Wellness Center, Upstate Police,<br /> Career Services, Bookstore, and the Library.<br /> In line with the serious academic component of the program, campers attended classes during the day, receiving<br /> instruction in English, math, Spanish, French, and study skills. The afternoons afforded sessions with community<br /> leaders and professionals who spoke to the students about career planning, public speaking/presentation skills,<br /> entrepreneurialship, and civic engagement. “I am so very pleased,“ stated Linda Williams, parent of two UB students,<br /> “My children got some very valuable information that will last them a life-time.” Students really raved about the rap<br /> sessions which gave them a platform to speak candidly with professionals about concerns centering on gender and<br /> generational issues.<br /> The camp was packed with academically-oriented events and socially-engaging activities such as a trip to<br /> Spartan 16 for movie night and a trip to Roebuck Skating Rink for a skate party; the last activity was a three-day educational<br /> trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The students toured Frances Marion University, Coastal Carolina, and<br /> Coker College. “The guided tours were interesting and the tour guides were very thorough in providing the type of<br /> information that our students need,” said Georgia McCarroll, alumni counselor for the program. “For some of these<br /> students it’s the first time they’ve stepped on a college campus *besides Upstate+”. I am originally from Peachtree City, GA. I attended Appalachian<br /> State University and received my B.S. in Recreation Management Outdoor<br /> Experiential Education. I worked for the YMCA of Greenville for many<br /> years running childcare programming for youth and teens.<br /> I came here to USC Upstate to obtain my teaching certificate<br /> for physical education. After leaving USC Upstate, I<br /> went to the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. At UWL I<br /> obtained my Masters in Physical Education- Teaching. I<br /> had the opportunity to teach physical education classes at<br /> UWL, and I also taught at the Crucifixion School, a K-6<br /> school in the area. I am very excited to be back at Upstate<br /> and teaching classes in physical and health education. I have a passion for adventure<br /> and outdoor pursuits, and much of my research revolves around implementing<br /> these programs into primary and secondary schools.<br /> I love to be outdoors kayaking, and hiking. Football season is my favorite and<br /> you will find me cheering on my Mountaineers every Saturday from now until,<br /> fingers crossed, January. I also enjoy playing with my dog, spending time with<br /> family and friends, and enjoying the many outdoor adventures around the Upstate.<br /> Dr. Roberta Gentry<br /> R<br /> oberta Gentry recently received her PhD in Education<br /> – Special Education Leadership and Disability<br /> track from Virginia Commonwealth University where she<br /> also spent the last year teaching graduate level students.<br /> She also holds a Master of Teaching degree in Special and<br /> General Education from University of Virginia and a Bachelor<br /> of Arts degree from Mary Baldwin College. Research<br /> interests include mentoring and induction programs, electronic mentoring,<br /> teacher preparation, and instruction for students with learning disabilities.<br /> Dr. Gentry has ten years of experience as a classroom teacher, was a Lead<br /> Teacher Specialist for Special Education responsible for programming for over<br /> 1,200 students with disabilities in nine schools, and was a contracted school<br /> psychologist. She and her husband, Chuck Goetz, recently married and relocated<br /> to South Carolina from Virginia where her husband will attend nursing<br /> school. Both are excited about moving to a new area and exploring. They have<br /> three children and two grandchildren that are also eager to visit and explore the<br /> area.<br /> Dr. Gary Bradley<br /> I<br /> am so pleased to be a part of<br /> the USC Upstate School of<br /> Education. Teaching math and<br /> science at the middle and secondary<br /> level for the past 20<br /> years has been very rewarding<br /> for me. Now I am looking forward<br /> to inspiring and equipping<br /> prospective teachers with a love<br /> and a passion for teaching. If my calculations<br /> are correct, there should be approximately 75+ new SOE<br /> freshmen on campus this fall. Last year this time, my numbers<br /> were closer to 108. That’s approximately a 31% decrease in the<br /> numbers for the fall.<br /> Senior Seminar presentations are another fun and interesting aspect<br /> of my job and as of last count, I have 13 requests from faculty.<br /> Of those 13, I’m excited to say that 5 are from the School of<br /> Education. Thank you to Professors Fleischmann, Whitmire, and<br /> Frost.<br /> Lastly, you may not be aware, but I am teaching a Freshman U101<br /> class this semester comprised of SOE majors. My goal for the class<br /> is to focus instruction around becoming an informed SOE student.<br /> Therefore, we are incorporating the SOE website into the<br /> class curriculum. For midterm, students will be given a multiple<br /> choice test based on the SOE student handbook. The information<br /> literacy component includes a presentation by Camille McCutcheon.<br /> Camille will cover database resources specifically for SOE majors.<br /> Students will use “Bullying” (cyber bullying, harassment, intimidation,<br /> physical, emotional etc.) as the subject of their research<br /> topic. Laura Hooks and Dr. Elaine Wiegert received a grant from the<br /> Center for International Studies to explore opportunities in Germany<br /> for School of Education( SOE) students. The trip included visits to a variety<br /> of schools and centers serving children of all ages as well as meetings<br /> and adventures with those from the area. As a result, we are able to offer<br /> two different possibilities for SOE students to travel and experience the<br /> culture and schools of Germany. Although some knowledge of German<br /> would be helpful, it is not necessary or required to participate in either<br /> experience. Students are invited to participate in a two week study in<br /> Germany with time spent in German schools and the surrounding area.<br /> Placements in schools will depend upon your area of interest and degree<br /> of knowledge of the German language. This opportunity is open to rising<br /> sophomores through seniors and includes the possibility of credit which is<br /> also dependent upon your program of study.<br /> Student teachers have an opportunity to complete a portion of their student<br /> teaching in a German school where English is an important component<br /> of the curriculum.<br /> There will be an informational brown bag lunch meeting on September<br /> 20, 2011. We will meet in HEC 2004 at 12:00 noon. If you are interested<br /> in going but are not able to attend this meeting please contact either Dr.<br /> Elaine Wiegert at 503-5529 5529 or Dr. Laura Hooks at 503-5547.<br /> 5547.<br /> Teacher Cadets...<br /> T<br /> uesday, September 13,<br /> USC Upstate will host the<br /> annual Teacher Cadet Instructors’<br /> Planning<br /> Meeting. USC<br /> Upstate partners<br /> with eight Spartanburg<br /> County<br /> high schools who<br /> participate in the<br /> Teacher Cadet Program. Instructors<br /> from those schools will<br /> have dinner and discuss plans<br /> for making this school year a<br /> success for our Teacher Cadets.<br /> The annual College Visit Day for<br /> Teacher Cadets in Spartanburg<br /> County will be held Tuesday,<br /> October 4. On College Visit Day,<br /> Cadets will hear from several<br /> SoE faculty about opportunities<br /> available to them at Upstate,<br /> such as athletics and the Teaching<br /> Fellows program. They will<br /> also meet representatives from<br /> admissions and the CERRA organization<br /> that sponsors Teacher<br /> Cadets. Students will take a<br /> tour of the campus, have lunch<br /> in the cafeteria, and go on a<br /> scavenger hunt with some of<br /> our Teaching Fellows. High<br /> school students who are enrolled<br /> in the Teacher Cadet Program<br /> have the opportunity to<br /> dual enroll at Upstate. Those<br /> students who are dual enrolled<br /> will have their student IDs made<br /> while on campus.</div>
